Education exposes children to new ways of thinking, and provides knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the workplace and fully participate in civic life. Education also enriches individuals’ lives by developing the capacity to think critically, appreciate culture, and maintain a sense of curiosity about the world. A good elementary and secondary education can spur young people to go on to higher education and pursue continual learning throughout their lives.

The data for the 2018 baseline is derived from fall enrollments reported by the Broward County School District where 23 Fort Lauderdale elementary, middle, and high schools are included in the count. This number includes prekindergarten through twelfth grade.

Data is reported on the first day of school and the benchmark day of enrollment, which typically is the Monday following the Labor Day Holiday.

There are many external contributing factors affecting the projection to confidently determine an exact numerical target, therefore staff has elected to set the target to increase.

The number of students enrolled in public schools in Fort Lauderdale decreased from 19,223 to 18,850 students for the 2021-2022 school year.  While there are many factors that contribute to this measure, the City continues to monitor this measure as it undertakes and promotes initiatives to improve the quality of public education in the City.

Broward County Public Schools. Each year the Demographics and Enrollment Planning Department at Broward County Public Schools gathers demographic data on all students in the County’s schools.
