Homelessness can be caused by poverty, unemployment, home foreclosures, divorce, disability, abuse, addiction, mental illness, and other factors. Individuals without homes experience harsh conditions and many homeless individuals have little hope to obtain treatment, counseling, or achieving long-term self-sufficiency.  This indicator assesses the number of unsheltered homeless individuals in the City of Fort Lauderdale

The Broward County data used for this indicator includes only Fort Lauderdale, unsheltered, homeless individuals. The number is based on a Broward County’s Point-in-Time (PIT) count, a statistically reliable count of people experiencing homelessness during a 24-hour period. Normally the count takes place in  January. In 2021 however the count was postponed until March  to ensure the safety of the Surveyors and participants. Instead of volunteers, a trained team of surveyors and experienced homeless outreach workers conducted the count.

The five-year target remains at 250 as per the previous strategic plan, Press Play Fort Lauderdale 2018.
