This measure quantifies City efforts to ensure that neighborhoods throughout the City are well-lit for both pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Streetlighting and public safety are related as illuminating pedestrians to vehicular traffic ensures that neighbors can walk safely during evening hours. Beyond making pedestrian travel safer, increased streetlighting can have a positive effect on deterring crime such as vandalism or theft if criminals know that certain areas that used to be poorly lit are now illuminated.

While there are many existing streetlights in operation in the City, this measure tracks the number of new lighting fixtures constructed and installed since FY 2023. This measure does not include the replacement of streetlight bulbs.

The target was established by reviewing year-to-year actuals in conjunction with the goals established in the City’s Streetlight Master Plan.

Data is reported through the Parks and Recreation Department’s facility maintenance records for street light installations.
