The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has set a six-minute guideline for fire department response time to a fire emergency. The composition of the standard includes the time for dispatchers to receive the alarm and then notify the first-responders, the time for fire station personnel to get on the road, and the time to travel to the incident.

This measure calculates the time of arrival for two firefighter/paramedics to an incident.

Responses to incidents that occur on highways have been removed from this measure to provide a clear picture of the residential, commercial, and community-based emergency medical services response times.

The response time target for residential fires, commercial fires, and emergency medical services (EMS) is based on NFPA recommendations for dispatch time, turnout time, and travel time, which together make up the total response time and is detailed in the City of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Community Risk and Standards of Cover.
