Homelessness can be caused by many factors such as economic challenges, chronic health conditions, domestic violence, substance abuse, or mental illness. In addition to the harsh conditions that individuals without homes experience, there is also a ripple effect on the community’s perception of safety, the use of public safety resources, and the dedication of resources to provide social services. 

This indicator includes only unsheltered, homeless individuals in Fort Lauderdale and is based on Broward County’s Point-in-Time (PIT) count, a count of people experiencing homelessness during a designated 24-hour period. Typically, the count takes place in January of each year.

There are many contributing factors that may influence this measure; however, historical data shows that the number of unsheltered individuals in Fort Lauderdale is trending upward.  The target for this measure will be to reduce the current level of homelessness by 20%.
