In 2010, the City’s fleet used 1,414,453 gallons of fossil fuel, contributing 18% of the overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of government operations for that year. Curbing vehicle fuel consumption supports the Sustainability Action Plan’s goal to reduce GHG emissions 20% by 2020 and fossil fuel use by 2% per year through 2020. An updated Sustainability Action Plan is under development.

Fuel consumption is calculated based on gallons dispensed from the City’s four fuel stations. Only vehicles from the City’s fleet can obtain fuel from the fuel stations.

The target was determined using the City’s Sustainability Action Plan methodology to reduce fuel consumption by 2% per year.

Fuel consumption is calculated based on gallons of gasoline and diesel dispensed from the City’s four fuel stations on a monthly basis. This information is tracked by the City's Fleet Services within the Public Works Department.
