Capital Projects are long-term projects to build, improve, maintain, or develop capital assets, such as City facilities or infrastructure. Capital projects must have a useful life of ten years or more, and a value of $50,000 or more. The Community Investment Plan (CIP) contains the City’s capital projects that are planned for the next five fiscal years.

The fiscal year 2023 reported asset value is an estimate as fiscal year 2023 year-end financial data is being finalized as part of the year-end audit process.

This performance measure indicates progress and investments made toward completing CIP projects which supports and advances Goal 1: Build a sustainable and resilient community.

Utilities maintenance expenditures as a percent of overall utilities assets

Maintenance expenditures as a percent of asset value is a metric used to assess the annual cost to maintain the utilities facilities and plants against the value of the facilities and plants.

The fiscal year 2022 reported asset value is an estimate as fiscal year 2022 year-end financial data is being finalized as part of the year-end audit process. 

This performance measure indicates the Public Works Department’s ongoing effort to ensure City utilities assets are well maintained, supporting and advancing Goal 1: Build a sustainable and resilient community.

Percent of citywide tree canopy coverage on public and private property

Fort Lauderdale’s urban tree canopy plays a vital role in the livability and sustainability of the City. Trees remove air pollutants and improve air quality, intercept rainfall and reduce stormwater runoff, increase property values, save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provide shade, and promote physical activity. 

This performance measure indicates the City’s ongoing effort to increase the urban tree canopy, supporting and advancing  Goal 1: Build a sustainable and resilient community.

Percent of households participating in waste diversion programs

The purpose of waste diversion programs is to divert solid waste away from landfills or incinerators through recycling, reduction of the creation of waste at the source, and controlling disposal of hazardous waste.  Thoughtful purchasing, careful use and appropriate disposal protects our environment, contributes to the local economy, and keeps our neighborhoods clean and safe.

This performance measure indicates the City’s ongoing effort to provide programs that minimize the amount of solid waste that end up in landfills, supporting and advancing Goal 1: Build a sustainable and resilient community.

Dunes provide vital protection to our beach ecosystem and the wildlife that inhabits it. They also help minimize beach erosion. The dunes protect the coast and upland properties from storm damage by blocking storm surge and absorbing wave energy.

This performance measure tracks the changes of Fort Lauderdale’s dune system and monitors the City’s efforts to increase it, supporting and advancing Goal 1: Build a sustainable and resilient community.

Percent of catch basins proactively inspected

Catch basins prevent stormwater pipes from becoming clogged with debris and sediment. They act as a first line of defense against clogs by trapping and removing debris, trash, and sediments from stormwater and preventing it from entering surface and ground water.

This performance measure supports and advances Goal 1: Build a sustainable and resilient community.

Satisfaction with the overall flow of traffic

The flow of traffic impacts the quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors in the City. This question is asked on the City’s Neighbor Survey that has been conducted since 2012.

The Neighbor Survey was not conducted in 2020 as the City has elected to conduct a Business Survey and a Neighbor Survey every other year. The Business Survey was launched in December 2020. This question is also included in the Business Survey. 

This performance measure is used to capture our neighbors’ opinion about the City’s progress and advancement of Goal 2: Build a multi-modal and pedestrian friendly community.

Percent of neighbors that drive to work alone

Providing diverse transportation options that are attractive and functional alternatives to driving alone encourage commuters to use other methods of transportation resulting in reduced traffic congestion.

Installed linear feet of bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and shared use paths

One way to enhance quality of life in the City is to have infrastructure in place that incorporates easy access to safe bicycle lanes, sidewalks and shared use paths for neighbors.

This performance measure is used to capture the progress and advancement of Goal 2: Build a multi-modal and pedestrian friendly community.
